Loktantrik Janata Dal leader Sharad Yadav on Monday said the Congress should be at the forefront of a grand alliance of Opposition parties against the BJP in the 2019 general elections.
The Opposition parties should forget their differences to oust the BJP from power and save democracy and the Constitution, he said.
‘Need of the hour’
Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Yadav said all Opposition parties were working to evolve a joint front against the BJP, which was the need of the hour. “The question as to who will become the Prime Minister is not important at this stage. The Opposition unity is more important to ensure that the BJP does not return to power.”
Mr. Yadav was in the Rajasthan capital for two days apparently to find a political ground ahead of the State Assembly election due in December this year. He said the LJD would contest 50 seats in the Assembly polls.
Mr. Yadav flayed Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over the Muzaffarpur shelter home rape case and demanded that the matter be probed by a team headed by a retired judge. He said the Centre should convene an all-party meeting to discuss the issue of exclusion of 40 lakh people in the final draft of Assam’s National Register of Citizens.
The LJD leader expressed surprise over Rajasthan Chief Minister undertaking a ‘Gaurav Yatra’ (march of pride), saying the ruling party's task was to fulfil the promises made to the people rather than indulging in the “gimmick of yatra”.
