The body has been shifted to the mortuary pending post mortem.

Police are tight-lipped about the incident except to say that the matter is under investigation. No responsible officer is ready to say whether it was a case of suicide or homicide.

However, sources said that she was hit in the back by a single bullet and it had exited from the abdomen. The source of the mystery bullet is not known yet.

The woman was rushed to hospital at 11 a.m. on Wednesday and she died shortly after admission, sources said.

The woman constable had been deployed at the entry gate of the office of the Chief Minister. There was no visitor on Wednesday since the Chief Minister and his family were away at his home in Thoubal district for the marriage feast of his eldest son.

Police have registered a case. However, no arrest has been made so far.
