Children of Tibetan refugees can vote

March 19, 2014 11:35 pm | Updated May 19, 2016 09:55 am IST - SHIMLA:

Children born to Tibetan refugees will be eligible for enrolment in the electoral rolls, provided the applicants were born in India on or after January 26, 1950 but before July 1, 1987.

This clarification was issued by the Election Commission of India, Himachal Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Narendra Chauhan said on Wednesday.

The applicant should ordinarily be a resident of the constituency where the application for enrolment has been made.

As per Section 3 (1) (a) of the Citizenship Act, 1955, children born to Tibetan refugees during the said period in India would be treated as Indian citizens.

The Electoral Returning Officers concerned should not deny them enrolment, the Chief Electoral Officer said.
