Frustrated over alleged demands of bribe from a SDM (Sub Divisional Magistrate), a Youth Congress leader from Bilha town of Bilaspur district in Chhattisgarh set himself on fire on October 26.

Rajendra Tiwari (24), a former Youth Congress Bilha block president, suffered 94 per cent burns and succumbed on Tuesday night at a Raipur hospital sparking protest in Bilaspur and Raipur districts.

Bilha SDM Arjun Singh Sisodia had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs. 10,000 from Mr. Tiwari to quash a pending warrant against him in a six-month-old case. Frustrated over the bribe demand, Mr. Tiwari tried self-immolation in front of Mr. Sisodia’s office.

Hundreds of Congressmen led by Marwahi MLA Amit Jogi blocked Raipur-Bilaspur highway on Wednesday and refused to cremate the body until the arrest of the SDM.

When the Congressmen refused to move away from the highway, Bilaspur District Collector P. Anbazhagan rushed to the spot and announced that a magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
