Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Friday described as “worrisome” the Centre’s affidavit in the Supreme Court , in which the government has stated that a caste Census of the Backward Classes was “administratively difficult and cumbersome”. It had exposed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) “OBC (Other Backward Classes) politics for electoral gains”, she said.

Ms. Mayawati said the Centre’s “clear refusal” to carry out a caste Census of the OBC groups had also exposed the difference between the BJP’s “words and actions”. She said the Centre’s affidavit was “very serious”.

She said on Twitter that the demand for conducting a caste Census of the OBC has caught pace in the country but the Centre’s clear refusal is going to hurt the entire society and their future in the same way in which they are being regularly hurt by vacant backlogs in jobs.
