Centre forcing RSS agenda on youth: Anand Sharma

June 15, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 07:14 am IST - SHIMLA:

Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Anand Sharma on Sunday said the Narendra Modi government is forcing the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh’s agenda on the youth of the country.

Talking to mediapersons here, he said institutions such as the University Grants Commission were being influenced by the RSS ideology.

Taking a dig at the foreign trips of Mr. Modi, he said the ‘excessive overseas touring’ of Mr. Modi had neither increased foreign investment nor resulted in any speeding up of development within the country. The government had badly failed in fulfilling its poll promises.

Mr. Anand Sharma, who is considered very close to the Gandhi family from the time of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, said the time had come for Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi to take the reins of the party. “When Smriti Irani can become the HRD Minister of India, why can’t Mr. Gandhi head his own party,” he asked.

Asked if he was interested in joining State politics, he said the party would decide about this later. Mr. Sharma, who was the Rajya Sabha member form Himachal Pradesh for a long time, had to seek the membership from Rajasthan last time as the BJP was in majority in his home State.
