CBI ready to probe Jindal varsity student’s rape case

May 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The CBI on Friday conveyed its willingness to the Supreme Court to investigate a complaint filed by an MBA student at Sonepat-based O.P. Jindal Global University, alleging she was raped and blackmailed by three seniors and the Haryana police probe is biased in favour of the accused persons.

A vacation Bench headed by Justice A.K. Sikri recorded the premier agency’s submission and gave the three accused five days’ time to respond to a notice on the student’s plea to transfer the case from the Haryana police to the CBI.

Status report

Posting the case for June 4, the Bench took on record a status report filed by the police and directed it to be kept in a sealed cover.

On May 25, the Bench had described the case as “serious.”

Appearing for the student, senior advocate Indira Jaising had contended that though the FIR was registered on April 11, none of the relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act were invoked in the case despite preliminary investigation showing the crime being committed largely using computers and mobiles. She argued that the police had felt no need for calling in a cyber expert.

Intimidation

Senior counsel claimed her client had suffered online blackmail, criminal intimidation and rape at the hands of her seniors, who have been arrested, over a period of time.

She claimed one of the accused first befriended her in the campus and then made her send her explicit pictures on the mobile phone. Afterwards, he exploited her and allowed his friends also to join him.

Ms. Jaising further accused the police of having behaved in an insensitive manner to the victim, asking her probing questions immaterial to the investigation.

Complaint said she was raped and blackmailed by three seniors
