Burqa-clad gunmen loot ₹5.20 lakh from bank in Kashmir

The police said an investigation was initiated.

Militants looted ₹5.20 lakh from a Jammu and Kashmir bank branch in south Kashmir on Monday, as daily life remained affected in Pulwama, a day after the killing of two Hizbul Mujahideen militants.

A police spokesman said militants belonging to the Hizbul Mujahideen barged into J&K Bank branch at Arwani, Anantnag, on Monday afternoon and looted ₹5.20 lakh.

Sources said the armed militants made their entry into the branch by wearing a burqa.

The police said an investigation was initiated. “With the help of CCTV footage, it is found that Hizb militants are involved in this crime. Efforts are on to nab the culprits,” said the police.

At least eight banks were looted in Kashmir by militants of the Lashkar-e-Taiba since summer of 2016.

A spate of bank robberies early this year forced banks to go for cashless banking in south Kashmir. But with an improvement in the security situation, banks resumed cash dispensation in the region where militancy is on the rise.
