In a major revamp, Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati on Wednesday replaced Swamy Prasad Maurya with Ram Achal Rajbhar as president of the party’s Uttar Pradesh unit.
Ms. Mayawati announced the change at a meeting of party MPs, MLAs and MLCs here.
The reasons for the removal of Mr. Maurya, who is the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, were not spelt out, but sources in the party said the change was made with an eye on the Lok Sabha elections. Furthermore, Mr. Maurya was holding two posts, so Ms. Mayawati divested him of one.
Mr. Maurya might be given some other responsibilities in the party set-up, the sources said.
Talking to journalists, Mr. Rajbhar, who was the Transport Minister in the BSP government, said his primary task would be to strengthen the party at the divisional level so as to expand and consolidate its support base for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
