‘Bombay' will now be replaced by “Gujarat” in the nomenclature of all the acts and rules in force in Gujarat, the Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, announced here on Saturday.
The new nomenclature will come into force from Sunday as Gujarat completes golden jubilee celebrations and enter 5st year of its existence.
There are 67 acts and laws still in force in the State which carry the name of ‘Bombay' in the short title which will now become ‘Gujarat Act.' Giving an example, Mr. Modi said the ‘The Bombay Land Revenue Code, 1879,' would henceforth be identified as ‘The Gujarat Land revenue Code, 1879.'
These acts and laws secured the name ‘Bombay' because they were passed and adopted during the undivided Bombay State. Even after Gujarat was carved out as a separate state on May 1, 1960, no step was taken in the last 50 years to identify the acts and laws with Gujarat. Some other acts which came into force only after the formation of the State, however, carry the nomenclature “Gujarat act” in the short title.
The state Assembly adopted a bill, ‘The Gujarat Short Titles (Amendment) Act, 2011,' at the budget session this year to replace ‘Bombay' with ‘Gujarat' in the titles of all the existing acts and laws, which received the necessary approval from the governor, Kamla Beniwal, earlier this month and was published in the State government's gazette extraordinary enforcing the act.
Mr. Modi claimed that it was his government's “gift” to the people of Gujarat on the occasion of completion of the year-long golden jubilee celebrations.
