In a great gesture, Dilip Barik of Rourkela travelled over 500 km to Odisha’s Berhampur on Saturday to donate his rarest of rare blood to save the life of a woman.
Sabita Raita, a tribal woman from Mandasingi village of Patrapur block in Ganjam district had given birth to a girl on October 13 in the MKCG medical college and hospital in Berhampur through caesarean section.
Following the delivery, her life was in danger due to extreme low haemoglobin level.
Although she needed blood transfusion, it was not possible as her blood group was found to be ‘Bombay A+ve’, an extremely rare blood group.
Dr. Rashmita Panigrahy, in charge of the hospital’s blood bank, located Mr. Barik, staying in Rourkela and part of a Bhubaneswar-based donors group, through her searches on social media groups.
Mr. Barik immediately agreed to rush to Berhampur to donate his blood.
He reached the blood bank on Saturday and donated the blood, which was immediately used to treat Ms. Raita. According to MKCG medical college sources, her condition was stable on Sunday.
The rare blood group is found in one out of 2,50,000 persons in India, said Dr. Panigrahy.
