BJP MP’s “Indian female figure” remark creates uproar

Shirt tucked in pants inconvenient for women police personnel , he says

BJP MP from Haryana DP Vats created a furore in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday when he said the uniform for women police personnel — pants and tucked in shirt — does not suit the “Indian female figure”.

In the zero hour Mr. Vats said, “The present pattern of summer working dress/uniform with shirt tucked under the belt and pant is very inconvenient for ladies in police and military, especially, during pregnancy and afterwards. It does not suit the Indian female figure.”

His comment drew angry retorts from women members in the Opposition with many including Congress MP Kumari Selja questioning it.

Mr. Vats suggested that the Ministry concerned should give an option of wearing safari uniform or salwar kameez with rank badges as per the respective dress colours. He said women in the Special Protection Group and Parliament security wear safari suit.

“In addition to Beti bachao, Beti padhao, make the Beti comfortable and dignified....that is to restore the dignity of Indian lady especially in uniform,” Mr. Vats said.

With loud protests from women members, he beat a hasty retreat. “It is not an aspersion, and if you feel that it is an aspersion, I apologise for that,” he said concluding his speech.
