A BJP leader was killed in the Mandirbazar area in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on Friday night. On Saturday, two persons were arrested.

The BJP leadership has alleged that Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers were behind the crime. The TMC has denied the charge.

The police said Shaktipada Sardar, a BJP block president in the Mandirbazar-Dhanurhat area, was hacked when he was returning home. “Mr. Sardar was found in a critical condition by locals near the road and rushed to the Diamond Harbour Hospital. He was referred to a hospital in Kolkata after his condition deteriorated. He succumbed to injuries on the way to Kolkata,” Tathagata Basu, Supernatant of Police of Sundarban, said.

Remanded in custody

Goutam Mondal and Abdul Haque Molla were arrested and produced before a court which remanded them in police custody for eight days, Mr. Basu said. He said Sardar had earlier been arrested in several cases.

As for the motive, he said no political link had not come up in the investigation so far. “Prima facie, the murder was the outcome of personal enmity,” he said.
