Normal life was disrupted in Jeypore Assembly constituency in Odisha’s Koraput district on Thursday following an eight-hour bandh call given by the BJP.
Local BJP workers had called the 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. bandh in support of four demands, including declaration of Borigumma as a notified area council. Borigumma is currently a panchayat and not recognised as an urban centre. The other demands included ‘non-transferable’ tag in land records of all residents in Jeypore constituency, a CBI probe into the alleged distribution of fake land pattas (documents) by the administration, and Jeypore government hospital to start functioning as a full-fledged district headquarters hospital.
The BJP workers took to the streets early morning and were seen picketing at several key points across the constituency. Many passenger vehicles stayed off the roads while several others were stranded due to the picketing. Many shops downed their shutters while educational institutions, banks and government offices could not function properly.
The impact of the bandh was felt most in Borigumma, where roads were tyres were burnt to block the roads.
