When several leaders from different political parties joined the BJP in Bihar on Wednesday, its State leader and spokesperson Azfar Shamshi was shot at in Jamalapur of Munger district. He was critically injured.
Mr. Shamshi, 59, a professor in theJamalpur Evening College, Munger, was shot at twice by some unidentified persons when he reached the college campus. He wastaken to the town hospital, where doctors referred him to Patna.
Munger Superintendent of Police Manavjit Singh Dhillon reached the spot of the incident and started investigation. One person had been taken into custody for interrogation, said a district police official preferring anonymity.
Mr. Shamshi is said to have had a duel with principal in charge of the college Lallan Prasad Singh. “My father was getting life threats on his mobile phone. Recently, he had a duel with principal in charge of the college”, Asad Shamshi, son of Azfar Shamsi, said.
Later, State BJP president Sanjay Jaiswal said he himself spoke to the Director General of Police about the incident. “Thelaw and order of the State has been a major concern for ChiefMinister Nitish Kumar,” he told media persons.
Several senior State leaders of the party called up Mr. Shamshi and assuredhim that the criminals would be arrested soon.
Opposition Congress leader Rajesh Rathore demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister for being the Home Minister over the incident. “Now, leaders of the ruling alliance parties are being attacked amid a deteriorating law and order situation in the State,” hesaid.
As many as 21 leaders from different political parties joined the BJP in the presence of State party in charge Bhupendra Yadav, Mr. Jaiswal and other senior leaders in the day.
