The extravagance and bling of big, fat Punjabi weddings, that have inspired many a Bollywood film, may soon be history.

Senior members of the Sikh community have come together to tone down the lavish celebrations and propagate the idea of simple, affordable wedding ceremonies.

“Over the years, the weddings in the community have become a blatant show of extravagance. The solemnity of marriage has faded away under the glitz,” says Dr P.S. Pasricha, former Director General of Police of Maharashtra who is also a member of the newly formed International Punjabi Forum (IPF) that has taken up the cause of bringing the community back to its roots.

Expensive affairs

“The expenditure involved in wedding ceremonies has been widely discussed within the community for long. We thought this was the best cause to take up for the Forum,” said Dr. Pasricha, adding that anywhere between ₹50 lakh to ₹10 crore are spent on wedding ceremonies.
