A 53-year-old Bhilai Steel Plant official was killed after he was crushed by a locomotive inside the plant in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district, police said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred when Assistant General Manager of Blast Furnace Department and In-charge of Highline Area B.R. Dewangan, was at the raw material unloading region in Steel Authority of India Ltd’s plant in Bhilai town, a senior police official said.

Soon after the incident, labourers and other officials at the spot informed the plant management and rushed the victim to the plant’s main medical post where doctors declared him dead, police said. A case has been registered in this connection, he said, adding that an investigation is on.

As per a statement issued by the plant management, “Dewangan had gone to the raw material unloading area in the blast furnace ore trench. While he was in the area, he was injured by a locomotive coming on the other line. He was rushed to the plant’s main medical post where doctors declared him dead.”

“An enquiry will be conducted into the incident and all possible support will be provided to his family as per company rules, including provision to provide employment to a dependent of the deceased,” the company statement said.

In June this year, six people, including two deputy general managers, were killed and 30 others injured after leakage of a toxic gas at the Bhilai Steel Plant. While the Chhattisgarh government ordered a magisterial enquiry into the incident, Union Steel Minister Narendra Singh Tomar had also constituted a high-level committee to probe the matter.

Nearly a week after this deadly incident, a labourer had died due to an electric shock in the plant premises.
