A consortium of organisations of imams claiming to have the allegiance of a majority of the clerics in West Bengal held the lawyers representing the State government responsible for the Calcutta High Court’s verdict on Monday striking down the State’s honorarium to imams and muezzins as unconstitutional.

“If the State government fails to do so, we will move the Supreme Court challenging the ruling,” said Mohd. Quamruzzaman, General Secretary of the All Bengal Minority Youth Federation, here on Tuesday.

He accused the State lawyers of not presenting the case properly before the High Court and failing to point out that the honorarium was paid through the State’s Wakf Board.

“In the affidavit submitted by the State government, it was not clearly stated that the honorarium was paid through the Wakf Board,” said Mr. Quamruzzaman.
