BJP MP and popular Bollywood singer Babul Supriyo, who was inducted into the Union Council of Ministers on Sunday, has seen a meteoric rise in his political career in just eight months.
Mr. Supriyo himself admits that his association with active politics started in March 2014, when the BJP fielded him as its candidate from the Asansol Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal’s Bardhaman district. Mr. Supriyo, 43, defeated his nearest rival, Dola Sen, a trade union leader and Trinamool Congress candidate from Asansol by over 70,000 votes.
Mr. Supriyo had left his job with a bank in Kolkata and moved to Mumbai in 1992 to make a career in Bollywood.
It was during the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s affection for the Commerce graduate from the University of Calcutta became evident.
