Azad writes to PM over hanging of cattle traders

Such episodes of brutality and mob violence tend to give a wrong perception of India, says the Congress leader.

Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad wrote to Prime Minister Narendara Modi on Sunday, protesting the killing and hanging of two cattle traders in Jharkhand’s Latehar district.

Mr. Azad said in his two-page letter that “such episodes of brutality and mob violence” tend to give a wrong perception of India, “which is widely respected as a vibrant and secular democracy governed by rule of law” in some parts of the world “where democracy does not exist.”

Drawing Mr. Modi’s attention to what he called “growing attacks” on the minority community, the Congress leader said the “spurt” in incidents of threats, intimidation, mob violence and vigilantism have become the order of the day after the BJP came to power in the Centre.

“Majoritarian view of democracy is being propagated and promoted consciously and deliberately. This has serious implications for the survival of democracy, pluralism, social harmony and peace besides growth and development of the country,” he said.
