Axed contract teachers may intensify stir

The Odisha Secondary School Teachers’ Association (OSSTA) has decided to throw its weight behind the Odisha Govt High School Contract Teachers’ Association in its ongoing agitation against the State government’s decision to annul the appointment of over 3,800 contract teachers.

The aggrieved teachers plan to gherao the official residences of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and School and Mass Education minister Devi Prasad Mishra at Bhubaneswar on November 26 demanding to recall the government decision.

In a contempt of court case, in which she is alleged to be a contemnor, the School and Mass Education secretary Ranjana Chopra in an affidavit to the High Court on Friday has stated that the State government has decided to annul the appointment of those contract teachers who were recruited after June 11, 2015.

One Seemanchal Sahu had moved the High Court in a civil contempt of court case making Ranjana Chopra as respondent stating that despite the High Court slapping a stay on recruitment of contract teachers on June 11 this year, the State government went ahead in appointing the contract teachers. Against a vacancy of over 10,000 school teachers, the government decided to recruit over 5,000 teachers this year and accordingly, 3802 contract teachers have already been appointed till date despite the HC stay on it.

Mr. Sahu in his petition has questioned as to why a contempt proceeding shall not be initiated against the respondent under Contempt of Courts Act of 1971.
