Claiming that the BJP-led government in Goa has collapsed and it has lost the trust of the people, the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) led by Chandrakant Kavlekar on Tuesday urged Goa Governor Mridula Sinha to summon a day-long session of the Assembly and direct the ruling coalition to take a floor test. Addressing the media outside the Raj Bhavan after meeting the Governor, Mr. Kavlekar said they have told her that the BJP-led alliance government will not be able to prove its majority and the Congress be given a chance to form the government.

Deepening crisis

The current crisis has arisen after ailing Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar was last week airlifted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi for treatment.

The BJP Central leadership is in the process of finding an alternative leader in the absence of Mr. Parrikar, even as allies are demanding a permanent solution to the issue. Some allies are even eyeing the Chief Ministerial post.

“When the government is falling they try to dissolve the House, or impose President’s Rule or keep the Assembly in suspended animation. They have done this before,” said Mr. Kavlekar, explaining the apprehension of the Congress.

“We requested the Governor that if they ask you to do these things, you should not concur . An election should not be imposed on people in one and a half years and if the present government is not capable [of continuing], we know it is not capable, then they should give us the opportunity,” he said.

He claimed that Governor Sinha heard the 15-MLA-strong delegation (MLA Reginaldo Lourenco is now out of Goa) and sought three or four days for her to get back to them. The Congress is the single largest party with 16 MLAs in the 40-member House. The NCP which has one MLA, Churchill Alemao, on Tuesday told the media that he will support the Congress.
