Sharing of waters between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana from Nagarjunasagar dam took an ugly turn on Friday when the policemen of the two States clashed with lathis at the dam site.
The clash came after day-long discussions between irrigation officials of the two States failed to achieve a breakthrough. Subsequently, officials from Andhra Pradesh tried to open the sluice gates of the right bank canal which carries water to Krishna delta. This was prevented by Telangana officials who said the former had overused its share of water from the reservoir.
In a bid to prevent the situation from worsening, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu spoke to his Telangana counterpart K. Chandrasekhar Rao. Both decided to settle the issue in the presence of Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan at Raj Bhavan at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning.
Mr. Naidu reportedly told Mr. Rao that the atmosphere should not be vitiated and the issue should be resolved amicably. The Telangana Chief Minister also reciprocated in the same way and agreed for the need to resolve the issue amicably.
