Barely a week after the illegal confinement of a minor rape victim in a police lock up in Bulandshahr, followed by the Supreme Court taking suo motu cognizance of the incident, a 16-year old gang-rape victim in Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh was allegedly beaten up by a lady constable at the behest of a sub-inspector of Afzalgarh police station.

The victim had gone to the police station on April 12 along with her parents for lodging a complaint against two youths who had allegedly gang-raped her the previous day when she was ‘assaulted’ by the cop.

Taking a serious view of the incident, Bijnor Superintendent of Police Sunil Bajpai on Monday ordered the suspension of the Station House Officer of Afzalgarh police station, Ramji Lal, the sub-inspector and the lady constable.

A case of rape was registered against the two accused at the behest of the Bijnor district police chief who visited Afzalgarh police station on Monday. They have been arrested.

After recording the statement of the victim and some witnesses, the SP decided to suspend the SHO and the two cops.

The victim belongs to Rasoolpur village in Bijnore district and had gone missing from her house on April 11.

The girl was found in an unconscious state the next day by her parents. She claimed that she had been gang-raped by two youths of the same village.

The victim and her parents had been trying to get the complaint registered in the police station since April 12, but to no avail.

The victim reportedly told the Bijnore SP that the police refused to lodge the complaint; on the contrary she was allegedly assaulted by the lady constable on the direction of the sub-inspector.
