The Congress on Friday appointed Captain Amarinder Singh the president of its Punjab unit on Friday, following the resignation of Pratap Singh Bajwa from the post on Thursday.

The party high command reshuffled two more positions, inducting MLA Sardar Lal Singh as the senior vice-president and Ambika Soni as chairperson of the campaign committee for the 2017 Assembly elections.

Capt. Singh, a former Chief Minister, who hails from a princely family, had locked horns with Mr. Bajwa in early 2015, picking holes in his leadership skills and doubting whether he was popular enough to lead the campaign in the upcoming elections.

Shortly after taking charge, Mr. Singh said the Congress had a strong footing in Punjab and in the coming days and he would “consolidate it further”.

Taking a jibe at the Akali government, Mr.Singh said his top priority was to restore the strained ties between the people and the State as “the Akali-BJP alliance has badly failed them.”
