Akhilesh Yadav seeks SIT probe into Unnao rape survivor accident

BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar is an accused in the case

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on July 30 demanded that a Special Investigation Team (SIT), under the supervision of a sitting judge, probe the Rae Bareli accident in which BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar is an accused.

Mr. Yadav, who met the family of the alleged rape survivor at the King George’s Medical University in Lucknow, told reporters that the “daughter will get justice” only if a SIT formed under a sitting judge probed the case.

The young woman, who last year accused Mr. Sengar of raping her, and her lawyer Mahendra Singh were seriously injured after a truck hit their car in Rae Bareli.

While the police said prima facie it appeared to be an accident, the family suspected foul play and demanded a CBI probe.

The Yogi Adityanath government has sent a formal request to the Central government to transfer the case, in which Mr. Sengar, his brother and their aides are booked for murder and criminal conspiracy among other charges, to the CBI.

Blaming the Adityanath government for the entire episode, Mr. Yadav said, “It is natural for the people to point their finger at the government and the BJP MLA.”

“Today, if her aunts have lost their lives, then who is responsible,” he asked.

He took swipes at Mr. Adityanath and said if such an incident took place in the State when it had a “Yogi as CM,” then who was responsible. “The police is responsible, the government is responsible. Then why is the government not taking any action,” Mr. Yadav asked.

He supported the family’s demand for the release of their uncle Mahesh Singh from the Rae Bareli jail in this moment of crisis.

The uncle is the complainant in the accident case and had made the request for the CBI probe in a formal application.

Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma said Mahesh Singh would attend the cremation of his dead relatives. He would be out on parole after the court granted the family’s request.
