Akhilesh Yadav sacks eight UP ministers, withdraws portfolio of nine

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday sacked eight ministers of his cabinet and withdrawn crucial portfolios from nine ministers in the biggest crackdown over non-performance. The sacked ministers include five Cabinet ministers and three Ministers of State rank.

The development comes ahead of the major reshuffle of the State cabinet expected on October 31 when new faces are likely to be inducted to give a new outlook to the Akhilesh Yadav cabinet ahead of the 2017 Assembly polls.

The Samajwadi Party sources told The Hindu that the ministers were sacked after the senior party leadership decided to crack a whip taking note of their non-performance. Stripping nine senior ministers of their crucial portfolios, was also part of the same process.

The ministers who have been removed from the State cabinet are Shiv Kumar Beria, Ambika Choudhary, Bhagwat Sharan Gangwar, Arindam Singh, Alok Kumar Shakya, Yogesh Pratap Singh, Shivakant Ojha and Narad Rai.

"The fact that this would be the biggest reshuffle of Akhilesh Yadav government only means that he is quite serious about the image and performance of his government ahead of the State Assembly elections," a senior SP leader told The Hindu.

"By noticing the non performance of these ministers, the Chief minister who is often accused of not being in control of his government, also wants to send the signal that he means business and would not tolerate any nonsense," the party leader added.

Those whose portfolios have been withdrawn include Health and Family Welfare Minister Hasan Ahmad, Social Welfare Minister Avdhesh Prasad, Basic Education Minister Ram Govind Chaudhary,  Food and Civil Supplies Minister Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya.

Other ministers to be divested of their ministries are Paras Nath Yadav, Durga Prasad Yadav, Brahma Shankar Tripathi, Iqbal Masood and Mehboob Ali. Their portfolios will be with the Chief Minister for now.

The Chief Minister had met Governor Ram Naik on Wednesday apparently to discuss the cabinet reshuffle which is expected at 10:30 am on October 31.

"The State cabinet will get more younger faces along with few experienced people as well. It is expected to have the stamp of Akhilesh Yadav in this reshuffle," said the party leader.
