A day after the media highlighted the plight of a gold medal-winning boxer compelled to work as a maid, Haryana Sports Minister Anil Vij on Wednesday announced Rs. 1 lakh in assistance for her.

Rishu Mittar, a Class X student, hails from Kaithal. She won the gold medal in the 46-kg category for the State in the National Games held at Gwalior in December last. She is now washing utensils in homes to continue her studies since her parents had died and her brother brings home a meagre sum by working in a shop, her coach Rajinder Singh said. However, she would attend boxing classes in the evening, he said.

Mr. Vij said the government would help Rishu pursue her studies and sports.
