The Jammu and Kashmir police have registered a case against Asiya Andrabi, Kashmiri separatist leader and head of the Dukhtaran-e-Millat, for unfurling the Pakistani flag on the eve of Pakistan Day.
Ms. Andrabi had hoisted the Pakistan flag in a closed room in Srinagar on Monday and said she has hundreds of FIRs against her name and this was just another of them. Senior police officials told The Hindu that they had registered a case under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act against Ms. Andrabi on Wednesday.
“We have registered case in the Nowhatta police station under Section 13(a) of UAPA. The decision of booking Andrabi was taken after consultation with the government,” a senior police officer said.
The police confirmed that the unfurling of the Pakistani flag was done indoors and they were yet to find out the exact location of the incident.
Ms. Andrabi told The Hindu that she and her party had been unfurling the Pakistani flag for the last 35 years on Pakistan Day and she would continue to do so. “My arrest is a political gimmick and I believe in unfurling the Pakistani flag and we have done it for decades,” Ms. Andrabi said. “They (India) cannot call me a traitor as I am not an Indian; the only way I can be a traitor is if I betray my people.”
