Ahead of the Assembly polls in Gujarat, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) became the first political party to release names of its candidates for 10 seats on August 2.

The party has released the first list of 10 candidates out of a total of 182 constituencies in the state for the upcoming Assembly elections due to be held in December this year.

The names selected by the party include senior leader and vice-president Bhemabhai Chaudhary from Deodar in Banaskantha district, while another vice-president, Jagmal Vala will contest from Somnath constituency in Saurashtra region.

A prominent activist Sagar Rabari; who joined the party last year, has been declared as the party candidate from Bechraji seat in North Gujarat. Mr Rabari spearheaded several agitations of farmers and marginalised communities in the state.

A tribal leader Arjun Rathwa has been nominated from the ST reserved seat Chhota Udepur in central Gujarat.

Ex-Congress leader and a Dalit face Vashram Sagathiya has been selected for Rajkot Rural seat from where he had lost with a slender margin in the last assembly polls in 2017 on a Congress ticket. He has been the Rajkot Municipal councillor and active in the local civic body politics in Rajkot. He joined the AAP earlier this year.

From Kamrej seat in Surat, Ram Dhaduk has been selected by the party while Shivlal Barasia for Rajkot South, Sudhir Vaghani for Gariyadhar in Bhavnagar and Rajendra Solanki for Bardoli seat in Surat.

The AAP is working to make inroads in the political landscape of Gujarat and wants to be the main challenger of the ruling BJP in the state. The party’s top leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been visiting the State frequently, addressing rallies and visiting temples.

The party has promised to provide free electricity up to 300 units and also Rs 3000 unemployment allowance the youth till they get the regular employment.
