CRPF jawan killed in Sringar attack

Hizbul Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attack.

A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel was killed and another injured as militants opened fire on a deployment in Srinagar’s busy Batamallo area on Tuesday afternoon.

A police official said the attackers fired at the security forces personnel near Fire and Emergency Services building. “The militants took advantage of the crowd in the area and managed to flee,” said the police.

Constable Shanker Lal from Rjasthan with the CRPF’s 23 Battalion was injured in the attack and later succumbed in a city hospital. “Another injured jawan was discharged from the hospital after the treatment,” said the police.

The police claimed it “has tangible leads on the attackers” and released a picture of the suspected militants from a CCTV grab. The picture showed two youth riding a motorcycle, with one wearing a helmet. The Hizb-ul Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attack

In a separate case, the police said they had reunited two children, who had fled from a religious seminary in Srinagar, with their families. The children were from Pulwama and Shopian.

A minor boy, Mohammad Ashiq, a resident of Kasba Kayan in Poonch, was injured near the Line of Control in cross border firing . An official said he was hit by shrapnel of a shell fired from across the LoC.
