A 71-year-old woman, Waikhom Mani, of Nongangong village in Thoubal district lost her life after India's ICC World Cup 2011 triumph. Shortly after 12.30 a.m. on Sunday, the victory was celebrated by revellers firing a hail of bullets from automatic rifles at many places in Manipur.

In one such incident, a bullet hit Ms. Mani, who was asleep, killing her instantly. There were holes of at least five bullets on the tin roof of her house.

Protesters blame security forces

The angry villagers took out a procession in the district saying that some security personnel were responsible for the wild firing. They also submitted a memorandum to the Collector demanding an inquiry. The family has refused to claim the body, demanding justice.

Police have registered a case. However, no arrest has been made.
