A week after two women from Maharashtra’s Thane district were arrested by the Mumbai police over a Facebook post questioning the shutdown of the city during Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray’s funeral, the State government on Tuesday suspended two police officials involved in ordering the arrests
Thane Superintendent of Police (Rural) Ravindra Sengaonkar and Senior Police Inspector of Palghar police station Srikant Pingale have been suspended, while Deputy Superintendent of Thane (Rural) Samrat Nishandar has been issued with a warning following a recommendation for action against them in a report presented by Inspector-General (Konkan range) Sukhwinder Singh, said Home Minister R.R. Patil, speaking to reporters at the Mantralaya.
Orders disobeyed
The officers were suspended for applying wrong Sections and disobeying orders from superiors while arresting the women, said Mr. Patil. He said he had asked for a departmental inquiry into the conduct of the officers.
Shaheen Dhada and Renu Srinivasan, both in their early 20s, were arrested by the Palghar police under Section 505 (2) of the Indian Penal Code on November 18 after some Sena leaders lodged a complaint against them.
