Two persons from Chennai, Akshaya Mahadeva (43) and Mohan Kumar (48), were arrested on Saturday afternoon for posing as officials of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and cheating Rs. 19,500 from students of a private school here.

According to Superintendent of Police (North) N.T. Sivadasan, the accused had sent a letter to the school management stating that the Ministry was offering a scholarship of up to Rs. 45,000 under a scheme for the students and that the application forms for the scholarship would cost Rs. 100 per head.

Mr. Sivadasan said that the school got suspicious of the two and then contacted the MHRD which denied the existence of any such scheme.

A case has been registered.
