Majority of presently operational madrassas have become factories to create communal Muslims and those who study there are “turning into Talibanis instead of scholars of Islam,” said Shiv Sena on Saturday.
In an editorial in party mouthpiece Saamna , Sena appealed Muslim population to throw away the burden of communalism and asked madrassas to accept the modernisation plan.
“The decision of not calling those madrassas who do not teach subjects like Maths and Science, as schools, should not be seen through prejudice mind or an attempt to curtail religious education. This will give an opportunity to common Muslim students to be a part of mainstream education,” said the editorial.
It attacked the maulvis of the community and Congress saying these elements kept Muslims away from mainstream. “While the world is becoming modern day-by-day, common Muslim is caught in the web of illiteracy and unawareness. The government’s decision is opposed only because educating Muslims would mean that the self proclaimed saviours of religions and parties like Congress would lose their support,” it said.
Supporting the state government decision to not call madrassas as schools the Sena said that Muslims must see this decision positively. “Muslims need to decide whether they want their future generations to become communal under the name of Islam or embrace modernity,” it added.
