The Chandigarh District and Sessions Court on Wednesday granted till February 8 bail to S.P.S.Rathore, former Haryana DGP, in the 1990 molestation case, on a personal bond of Rs. 1 lakh.

The court asked him to deposit his passport with it within seven days and not leave the country. It will hear the case continuously for three days February 8 onwards.

Rathore had filed an appeal against his conviction in the molestation case by a CBI special court here on December 21.

Emerging from the court, Rathore told journalists he would continue to smile if he was further harmed by the media, as he had learnt to smile before adversaries from Jawaharlal Nehru. “I learnt to smile from my Lucknow University days when I used to run with the boys to see Nehru. He taught us to smile before adversaries,” he said. “The more you [journalists] harm me, the more I will smile. I am a born fighter.”

Serving him a six-month imprisonment, the CBI court held Rathore guilty of molesting a 14-year-old budding tennis player, who committed suicide three years after the incident. He secured bail immediately, and the short sentence led to an uproar in different sections of society.
