Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT), which was closed down following clashes among rival groups of students on Tuesday, may reopen on September 20 next, the Sikkim ManipalUniversity (SMU) Vice-Chancellor S S Pable said on Thursday.

“We are deliberating on resuming academic activities from September 20 but there is another proposal to do so from September 29 after Dussehra festival... the final decision will be taken very soon and the outstation students’ will be intimated about the decision,” he told PTI here.

Apparently stung by the furore generated over the violence in the SMIT campus, the Vice-Chancellor said that adequate security measures will be put in place to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future.

The process of hiring private security guards and retired army personnel will begin soon as part of the proposals to strengthen security measures in the SMIT campus, Mr. Pable said.

The SMIT will also have facilities to counsel the students and a team of experts will be hired for the purpose.

The VC said that enquiry was underway and documentary evidence was being collected to identify those students involved in the violence.

All outstation students numbering over 2000 have vacated their hostel accommodations following the decision to close down the SMIT campus for at least ten days.
