Pre-monsoon rain claims five lives in north Maharashtra

Five persons were killed in lightning strikes in Nashik and Jalgaon districts which were lashed by heavy pre-monsoon showers accompanied with thunderstorm, official sources said on Thursday.

Three of them died in Nashik and two in Jalgaon at different places in the two north Maharashtra districts since June 1, they said.

Trees were uprooted in stormy wind, while roofs of some houses were blown away in Nashik, the sources said, quoting reports reaching here.

Vehicular traffic on the busy Sinnar-Shirdi Road was disrupted due to heavy rain on Wednesday evening. Nashik district recorded 157mm rainfall, they said.

However, pre-monsoon rain is considered beneficial for agricultural purposes.
