People in Jammu and Kashmir get respite from cold

People of Jammu and Kashmir got respite from biting cold conditions on Friday as mercury rose in the region due to cloudy cover overnight even as frontier region of Ladakh continues to reel under intense cold wave.

The minimum temperature in Jammu settled at 10.2 degrees Celsius today against 8.2 deg C on Thursday, Met office said.

Katra, base camp for Vaishno Devi shrine, recorded a low of 10.3 deg C against 9.4 deg C on Thursday.

Batote settled at a low of 3.2 deg C followed by Bhaderwah and Banihal at 1.7 deg C and 0.6 deg C respectively.

Srinagar, summer capital of the state, recorded a low of 0.4 deg C against 0.1 deg C on Thursday.

Pahalgam, a hill resort in south Kashmir, was the coldest place in the Valley with a low of minus 2.3 deg C.

The minimum temperature also improved in other places with Qazigund and Kokernag in south Kashmir recording a similar low of 1.1 deg C. Kupwara in north Kashmir settled at 0.1 deg C.

However, frontier region of Ladakh continues to reel under intense cold with Leh recording a low of minus 8.6 deg C and Kargil at minus 7 deg C.
