Panel on Bhopal an eyewash: D. Raja

The United Progressive Alliance government's decision to constitute a Group of Ministers (GoM) on Bhopal is a mere “eyewash,” and such committees formed in the past “did not” serve the purpose, secretary of the national council of the Communist Party of India D. Raja has said.

Successive GoMs were “not” able to deliver justice to the victims of the gas tragedy and punish the culprits responsible for the tragedy.

The need of the hour was “determined action” on the part of the Centre so as to render justice to those who had suffered, he told a press conference here on Saturday.

On the Congress' claim that the Centre was not involved in providing a safe passage to Warren Anderson, who was chairman and chief executive officer of Union Carbide when the tragedy occurred, the CPI leader said the then Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Arjun Singh might have helped Anderson reach New Delhi.

“The Congress party should tell the nation who allowed the CEO to leave the country,” he said.

Terming the second tenure of the UPA government “complete failure,” he said the national convention of Left parties to be held on July 1 would discuss the ways to intensify the struggle against the anti-people policies of the UPA.
