Against the backdrop of the Pathankot terror attack, Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati on Monday slammed the Narendra Modi-led NDA government over its 'ineffective' foreign policy with Pakistan.

She said Mr. Modi's approach towards Pakistan was ridden with “instability” and “powerlessness.”

In such a scenario, the situation at the international border continues to be unsafe, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister told party office-bearers here in a review meeting for her 60th birthday celebrations (January 15).

Through speeches of BJP leaders and ministers during campaigning for the 2014 general elections and after the NDA came to power, people felt that things would improve in regard to Pakistan, Ms. Mayawati said.

“People had felt that with the BJP in power, policy towards Pakistan would change and bring stability. But Narendra Modi’s policy regarding Pakistan has been constantly changing and none of it appears to have been effective,” she said.

While accusing the BJP and the ruling Samajwadi Party in UP of a tacit understanding, Ms. Mayawati also launched a tirade against the Akhilesh Yadav government calling its stance “unconstitutional and irresponsible.” The SP government was busy promoting the Yadav family and occupied with its “family show” Saifai Mahotsav even as a sense of “anarchy” prevailed in the State, Ms. Mayawati said.

Meanwhile, the party is gearing up for BSP chief’s birthday celebrations, which have been well-watched over the years. The day would be celebrated as a Jan Kalyankari Diwas across the country, Ms. Mayawati instructed party workers indicating at a low-key affair this time.

The day has traditionally been a mix of lavishness and charity. While she was in power, she used the day to announce major welfare schemes.

Ms. Mayawati has instructed party functionaries to organize programmes at the district level and shower gifts upon the downtrodden as part of a “social responsibility.”

At her birthday function in Lucknow, the next edition of her book, “A Travelogue of my struggle-ridden life and BSP movement,” along with the party calendar, would also be launched.
