Manipur drivers reject offer

August 01, 2010 10:38 pm | Updated 10:38 pm IST - IMPHAL:

Transport drivers in Manipur have spurned the offer of a Central team, led by Secretary of Border Management A.E. Ahmed, of providing adequate armed security personnel as escorts for trucks and buses plying along the Highway 39 that snakes through Nagaland.

The officials, who arrived here on Saturday, held meetings with Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, senior Ministers, top civil and police officials and representatives of the Transporters and Drivers Council.

It was pointed out that there were reports that there was no interference from the CRPF personnel when illegal taxes were extorted from drivers.
