Jharkhand Governor K Sankaranarayanan on Saturday pulled up the state officials for lapse of whopping Rs 1,000 crore Central money earmarked for rural areas and said it should not be repeated again.
“Rs 1,000 crore lapsed in 2008-09. It is unfortunate because the funds are meant for the people living in rural areas. This should not be repeated,” the Governor said.
Jharkhand is currently under President’s rule, which was imposed after the then Chief Minister Shibu Soren failed to get himself elected to the state Assembly in a by-election.
Addressing the State-level Convergence Workshop on NREGA and National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD) here, he sought to fix responsibility for the lapse and said Deputy Commissioners were the most important functionaries for implementation of schemes under NREGA.
Referring to various problems being faced by the state, including that of naxalism, Mr. Sankaranarayanan said, “If jobs are given to the youth and living standards are improved, all problems will be solved”.
