An alleged militant associated with the terrorist organisation Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami and wanted for the kidnapping of a city industrialist in 2001, was arrested here on Wednesday night.

“On a tip-off, the Special Task Force of the Kolkata Police arrested Muijanur Rehman (45), who had been hiding in Bangladesh for the last 12 years. He sneaked into Kolkata recently,” said Joint Commissioner (STF) Rajeev Mishra.

“Rehman is also associated with the Indian Mujahideen group and was involved in the Varanasi blast of 2006.”

Khadim shoe company owner Partha Pratim Roy Burman was kidnapped on July 23, 2001 from the Tiljala area here and was kept in captivity in a house in North 24 Parganas near the India-Bangladesh border for eight days before his release, reportedly for a ransom.
