The Himachal Pradesh police on Saturday detained half a dozen persons in connection with the alleged lynching of a youth over suspicion of smuggling cattle at Lawasa village of Sirmaur district, using clues from photographs posted on the social networking sites and a vernacular daily.

Director-General of Police Sanjay Kumar said the police teams have gathered clues from the pictures on the websites and had so far rounded up six persons and they were being questioned about the incident. Reportedly, those who have been rounded up have already criminal cases registered against them. It could not be established at this juncture whether the activists involved were from the right wing organisations. “It seems that the matter is being blown out of proportion by a section of the media,” said the State police chief.

The police have also sent one team to the native village of the victim, Noman, to verify his antecedents.
