Forced to wear Maoist uniform and thrashed by police: Villager

A civilian was allegedly forced to wear a Maoist uniform and beaten up by the police in Gadchroli district of Maharashtra last month.

Harilal Dhurve (40), a resident of Marma village in the Dhanora division of Gadchiroli, has written to the District Collector demanding security from some police officers posted at the Malewara police post.

Complains to Collector

In his complaint to the Collector, Mr. Dhurve said: “On May 22, I went to Malewara town for the weekly market. While returning to my village, some policemen led by officer Vare stopped me near a hospital and started beating me. They thrashed me for three hours until I fell unconscious. The policemen then removed my clothes and put a Maoist uniform on me.”

‘Life under threat’

The small trader from Marma village has also accused the policemen from the Malewara post of forcing a gun into his hand and clicking his photos.

“They clicked my photos in Maoist uniform with a weapon in my hands. Now, they can declare me a Maoist and implicate me in any Maoist-related case. Mr. Vare has warned me against talking about the incident to anyone. He also threatened me that I would be killed in a fake encounter in the forest if I revealed anything to the villagers who had gathered outside the police post when I did not return home on the evening of May 22. My life is under threat and the police will be responsible if anything happens to me,” Mr. Dhurve told the Collector.

Mr. Dhurve’s relative Ganesh Pada was also allegedly thrashed by the police a few weeks ago.

Mr. Vare could not be reached for his reaction.

Inquiry ordered

Reacting to Mr. Dhurve’s allegations, the newly appointed Gadchiroli district Superintendent of Police Abhinav Deskhmukh said: “We are aware of the complaint made three days ago. The Sub-Divisional Police Officer of the Kurkheda division has been asked to inquire into the case.”
