Five killed as jeep falls into Alaknanda river

Five people were killed while two others feared drowned when a jeep in which they were travelling fell into Alaknanda river in Rudraprayag district on Friday, officials said.

The mishap occurred at Retoli area when the jeep carrying 10 passengers, en route to Haridwar from Rudraprayag, skidded off the road and fell into the river.

A rescue and search team comprising police and ITBP personnel has so far fished out five bodies from the river and search is on to find out the other two, the officials said.

Three persons were also injured in the incident, Disaster Management and Mitigation Centre (DMMC) officials said.

They were rushed to Rudraprayag district hospital where their condition is stated to be out of danger.
