An earthquake of magnitude 6.3 on the Richter scale jolted Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir valley at around 01.21 AM on Friday, but there was no report of any casualty, officials said.
Residents ran for safety as doors and windows of buildings rattled due to the quake, the epicentre of which was Hindukush mountains in Pakistan, they said.
Panic gripped the border town of Uri in Baramulla district, 100 km from here as people scampered for safety.
For nearly two hours, the residents did not return to their homes in fear, as the area had suffered extensive damage in the earthquake that struck on October 8, 2005.
Nearly 1,000 people were killed and hundreds injured that year in Uri, Tangdhar, Keran and Karnah besides causing damage to many houses.
