Goa’s Tourism Minister Fransisco Pacheco has been summoned by the State police in connection with the death of a 28-year-old woman, who allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison.

“South Goa district police issued summons to the minister at 4.00 p.m last evening. The minister could not present himself before the police as summon reached his office at 4.20 pm,” Lyndon Monteiro, officer on special duty to the minister, told PTI.

He said the minister had left for work when the summons were served.

Ms. Nadia Torreado died on Sunday at a Chennai hospital after allegedly consuming rat poison.

Women’s organizations had alleged involvement of Pacheco in her death. However, Mr. Pacheco had rubbished the allegations claiming that Nadia was his family friend.

Alleging harassment by police, the family members of Ms. Nadia said they will approach the National Human Rights commission (NHRC) with their complaints against the police.
