Life was disrupted today across Kashmir valley, including the state capital, where curfew-like situation prevailed following a general strike called by hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference against alleged human rights violations in the state.
The call for strike has been given by the Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani against “human rights violations, increasing arrests and atrocities on civilians“.
The faction has also threatened mass agitation if government failed to curb “atrocities and human rights violations” in the state.
Fearing trouble, authorities imposed prohibitory orders restricting movement of people in the old city to prevent them from taking out processions and staging demonstrations.
“There are many volatile areas in downtown Srinagar where we expect protests and processions. We have decided to impose restrictions in the areas falling under six police stations,” a police official said.

However, a police spokesman clarified that curfew has not been imposed in any part of the city, but prohibitory orders have been enforced strictly.
